タイトル Predictive Modeling Enabling Industry: Combustion CFD Analysis Led Design at Cummins
講演者 Cummins 社 様
概要 John M. Deur, Ph.D.
Director, Combustion Research

Cummins is the leader in internal combustion engine technology, developing and producing engines to meet our customers' needs for clean, efficient power around the world. This presentation will show how Cummins meets these needs today and will continue doing so in the future by examining our combustion system design process through consideration of the following topics:

  • Challenge: Cummins’combustion system designers must meet increasingly stringent emissions and performance requirements for an ever widening product range with ever tightening delivery schedules.
  • Approach: To meet these challenges, Cummins has developed an Analysis Led Design (ALD) process combining multidimensional engine simulation as its principal design tool, anchored with engine data for calibration and validation.
  • Uncertainty: Limitations of current physical models and high computational costs preventing use of more sophisticated models can lead to uncertainties in results which limit advances in ALD application.
  • Improvement: To alleviate this uncertainty, Cummins continuously evaluates its ALD process and is always seeking new ways to improve both the quality of its results and the speed of their delivery.
  • Opportunity: in conjunction with Convergent Science and Cummins' other research and development partners, improvements in physical models are being sought and implemented in many areas: wall heat transfer, turbulence, combustion chemistry, combustion-turbulence interaction, sprays, etc.
  • Cost: Since higher fidelity physical models typically impose higher computational costs, Cummins, again in conjunction with its ALD partners, is pursuing new computational strategies and technologies to ensure that future design needs can always be met with the best possible solutions.
